Frontier Christmas for School Groups
at Rocky Mount where Tennessee Historical Begins
Experience Christmas on the Tennessee Frontier
Invite your students to step back in time with Rocky Mount’s “Frontier Christmas for School Groups: A Journey to 1790.” This immersive, hands-on program transports students to the early days of America, revealing how families celebrated the holidays on the Tennessee frontier.
During the holiday season, Rocky Mount transforms into a festive wonderland that mirrors the traditions of a 1790s Christmas. Students will embark on a guided tour of the historic Cobb-Massengill House and its outbuildings, all adorned with authentic period decorations. Along the way, costumed interpreters bring history to life through storytelling, demonstrations, and interactive activities.
After the tour, students engage in crafting their own 18th-century-inspired Christmas creations. Each activity is designed to spark creativity while deepening their understanding of early American life.

What Teachers & Parents Are Saying
"Rocky Mount is the perfect place to take a walk-through history. From their museum, to the grounds, to the staff; all is engaging for any age. We love being able to learn the history of our area, but also the lifestyle of the people during that time period. We go as a family, but I also take my class on field trips. I always leave with a new fun fact."

"This is a neat place to visit. People are in colonial garments and it’s a similar experience to visiting Williamsburg. We went earlier this year to learn how to make candles and soap. My 5-year-old loves it! We just did their Christmas program, and it was very informative. Also, they have sheep you can pet. Who doesn’t like to pet sheep?!"
