These tours are a nighttime glimpse of Christmas Eve of 1791 as the Cobb family hosts Governor Blount and his wife. Hear stories in each of the rooms of our historic site that will make you laugh, cry, and think while the candles flicker around you during the season of giving.

Join the Cobb family and their friends as they celebrate the harvest. Living history tours of the Cobb farm will take place all day. Demonstrations on site will include blacksmithing, fireplace cooking, apple butter making, apple cider pressing, and much more. Stop and smell the biscuits baking in the kitchen or give the apple butter a stir.

Homeschool Day
Rocky Mount State Historic Site’s annual “Homeschool Days” program allows children who are homeschooled the opportunity to take part in our Tour & Craft program. This program is traditionally offered to brick and motor school students and requires a “classroom” sized group for reservations. With remote learning now offered as an educational option for students this fall, our Homeschool Days program is also a great opportunity for those students as well.

Overmountain Victory Trail Association Day
Join us at the encampment of the Overmountain Men, as they recreate that fateful evening of September 24, 1780, in their first leg of the triumphant over-the-mountain march to the victory at King’s Mountain. Each year, members of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association recreate this historic march by traveling in the footsteps of those Overmountain Men from Abingdon, VA to King's Mountain, SC.
Would you have made a good solider? Try your hand at cartridge rolling to find out. Could you have made 400 candles? How about just 1? Visit our candle dipping pot to see how they turn out! Roam the historic grounds, visit the various demonstrations, and chat with the interpreters. You might even get to meet Mary Patton, one of the finest powder makers in the Watauga Settlement, herself!!
This FREE event starts with the posting of the colors, and Pledge of Allegiance. There will also be demonstrations of the period trades such as blacksmithing, a doctor, quilting, and more. Open house style tours of the historic site will also be available throughout the day.
At the end of the day, stay for the captivating evening narrative describing the daring attempt of local settlers and farmers to secure their independence by halting the westward expansion of the British Army. Bring a chair, as the program will be in our bard field (weather permitting), by the Overmountain Victory Trail Association.

On July 22nd, 2024, Rocky Mount State Historic Site will have the distinct pleasure of hosting the Washington County VA Master Gardeners for an exclusive visit and special exploration of our beautifully preserved colonial gardens. 🌱
Highlights of the Visit:
Guided Exploration: Master Gardeners will delve into the unique horticultural practices and plant varieties found in our historically significant gardens.
Expert Insights: Don Davis, Rocky Mount's Board President and esteemed Master Gardener, will share his extensive knowledge of the gardens' history and design.
Knowledge Exchange: This visit offers a valuable opportunity for Master Gardeners to learn from Rocky Mount's expertise and for Rocky Mount to benefit from the Washington County VA Master Gardeners' insights.

Woolly Days & Garden Arts Festival
Celebrate Spring at Rocky Mount!
Ever wonder how much a sheep's wool coat weighs? Or where you get wool fabric? How about where your wool socks or gloves come from?
Rocky Mount State Historic Site will answer ALL those questions and more, during the annual Woolly Days & Garden Arts Festival festivities. “Woolly Days” features hand-shearing of Rocky Mount’s flock of Cotswold sheep, wool processing techniques of the 18th century, and other spring activities on a frontier farm. The “Garden Arts Festival” will be a celebration of all things gardening – from plants to handmade items for the home, garden, and gardener, to delicious foods and informative talks and tours.

Gardening Fun Day
Spring is a season of new beginnings and growth. It was also a time for many mountain families to start planting crops, vegetable gardens, and producing livestock. This production kept the family going for the rest of the year.
Looking for a fun filled spring day for the entire family? Look no further than Rocky Mount State Historic Site’s Family Gardening Fun Day! There is something for everyone to enjoy, including demonstrations, local vendors and craft artisans, food trucks, and more. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to learn about modern and colonial spring traditions!
Come experience 18th century life at its finest with demos onsite that will include blacksmithing, fireplace cooking, spring chores, and much more. There will be corn hole, and other 18th century games available for all ages, weather permitting. Crafts, including flower pot painting painting, birdhouse building, paper wreath making, and candle making will be offered for an additional fee.

Halloween is coming early at Rocky Mount! Get a chill down your spine on a hot summer night as you listen to some great spooky stories! Creepy tales unfold from within the graveyards of Jonesborough, TN. (the oldest town in Tennessee, famous for its storytellers---and its ghosts).

Old-Fashioned Independence Day
Want to know what early July 4th celebrations were like?
Join the Cobb’s, their family, neighbors, and friends as they celebrate our Independence Day as it would have been in 1791!
There will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence, hanging ribbons on the 'Liberty Tree,' as well as honoring those who won and those who protect our freedom. Governor William Blount and Secretary Daniel Smith will be here for a meet and greet.
There will be kids activities, craft demonstrations, vendors, food trucks and more! Living History tours will be offered throughout the day.

Rocky Mount is excited to announce our annual gardening classes and workshops. Beginning Herbs & Herb Gardening begins the series. This will be a day long event with 2 sessions and a break for lunch. We are very fortunate to have 2 of Rocky Mount's own Master Gardener's teaching this workshop.

Our Christmas Candlelight Tours are always a favorite and a tradition for many of our guests. These tours are a nighttime glimpse of Christmas Eve of 1791 as the Cobb family hosts Governor Blount and his wife. Hear stories in each of the rooms of our historic site that will make you laugh, cry, and think while the candles flicker around you during the season of giving.

Experience the haunted history of the past as you tour our historic site guided by an 18th century interpretive storyteller and listen to the chilling tales of the past and recent accounts of paranormal encounters.

Harvest Festival
Join the Cobb family and their friends as they celebrate the harvest. Living history tours of the Cobb farm will take place all day. Demonstrations on site will include blacksmithing, fireplace cooking, apple butter making, apple cider pressing, and much more. Stop and smell the biscuits baking in the kitchen or give the apple butter a stir.

Homeschool Day
Rocky Mount State Historic Site’s annual “Homeschool Days” program allows children who are homeschooled the opportunity to take part in our Tour & Craft program. This program is traditionally offered to brick and motor school students and requires a “classroom” sized group for reservations. With remote learning now offered as an educational option for students this fall, our Homeschool Days program is also a great opportunity for those students as well.

American Heritage Festival
Rocky Mount is stretching its timeline.
The site will play host to its 4th Annual American Heritage Festival, June 11th & 12th, 2022. The weekend festival will not only tell the tale of William Cobb and his historic cabin, but the timeline of the region through the centuries. The event is one of the largest historical events spanning from the Revolutionary Wars to current times.
Living history reenactors, authors, storytellers, and musicians will guide guests through history during the annual event, sharing their knowledge, and giving them a peek at the different facets of life over the years.
